Historical memories

I spent 10 years/20 months of my life at camp, 1961-70. All we had was the radio and news from home to let us know what was happening in the world. The following are some of the most important non-Wingfoot events that I remember happening during those summers:

  • 1962: Marilyn Monroe died in August. I was only 10, but knew it was a big deal.
  • 1965: the civil rights riots in Watts (L.A.)
  • 1966: reading the August issue of Seventeen Magazine was 'da bomb; also reading the racy "Valley of the Dolls"
  • 1967: the "Summer of Love" in San Francisco; a great year for music!
  • 1968: Vietnam War was raging
  • 1969: (big year!) the only time I regretted no having a TV was the first moon walk in July. All we could do was gaze at the moon from the upper athletic field! Also Woodstock and Chappaquiddick.
  • 1970: the summer before I was to start college. Enough said...
